About The Position

National Institute of Aerospace (NIA) located in Hampton, Virginia, has an opening for a Research Scientist to conduct research on the topic of Atmospheric and Fire science. The successful candidate will support research leading to the development of a satellite-derived smoke plume injection height database. This will involve working with large databases and ArcGIS, a geographic information analyses system. Research activities will include but are not limited to linking space-based aerosol data to on-ground fires; development of a fire folder system that will be used to publicly serve these data; and assistance in the development and writing manuscripts, which will include generating graphics and statistics. This work supports multiple government customer programs and requires the individual to collaborate with individuals in government service and academia in support of shared research goals. Successful candidate will be expected to present progress at relevant technical meetings.

Requirements

  • MS or equivalent in Earth Science or Engineering.
  • No less than 10 years post-graduate experience.
  • Expertise or experience in using ArcGIS Model Builder.
  • Expertise or experience in Python programming.
  • Expertise or experience using satellite data, particularly for wildland fire, air quality and health.
  • Expertise or experience in wildland fire (fuels, active fire, burned area, emissions).
  • Expertise or experience working with large data sets.
  • Expertise or experience in word products, e.g., worksheets (excel; access), word, Teams.
  • Expertise or experience with data visualization and developing figures.
  • Experience in one or more of the following topics: atmospheric sciences, fire or smoke science, modeling, weather, climate, forestry and/or ecology.
  • Ability to successfully complete a background investigation required to obtain a NASA badge.

Nice To Haves

  • Strong Geographic Information Systems (GIS) skills that are based in scientific analysis.
