About The Position

Under direction of a division director or other supervisory official in a State department, institution or agency, supervises and independently initiates, designs, coordinates, and implements highly complex chemical research projects, primarily in a laboratory setting, and may include related field and/or office work; supervises highly complex chemical tests and analyses in the field, office, and/or laboratory; supervises staff and work activities; prepares and signs official performance evaluations for subordinate staff; does other related duties as required. Specific to Position The supervisor must have practical & working experience with the techniques in environmental chemistry used to analyze various media to determine the identity & extent of contamination. Must be familiar with the Tech Regs; Lab Cert Regs; & guidance documents used when analyzing environmental samples & the interpretation of the resultant analytical data. Will oversee & mentor the Research Scientist staff, assign work tasks and conduct administrative & personnel related tasks. These tasks may include completing ePARS & time sheets in a timely manner, evaluating staff performance and recommending promotions. Participates in complex technical consultations and problem resolutions with the regulated & lab communities; supports management on case specific and wide-ranging guidance and policy issues. Assists in litigation support of high profile cases. Maintains a current & thorough knowledge of technical issues and analytical protocols related to the investigation & remediation sites.

Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Master of Science degree in chemistry or other appropriate physical or environmental science discipline.
  • Four (4) years of experience in chemical analysis or chemical research.
  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a Bachelor of Science degree in chemistry or other appropriate physical or environmental science discipline.
  • Five (5) years of experience in chemical analysis or research; one (1) year of which must be in the operation of the gas chromatography mass spectrometer, gas chromatograph, high performance liquid chromatograph, fourier transform mass spectrometer, inductively coupled plasma spectrometer, atomic absorption spectrometer, x-ray defractor, transmission electron microscope, or updated replacements thereof.
  • Possession of a driver's license valid in New Jersey only if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with VOAs, Semi-VOAs, Pesticides; Aroclors; PCDDs.
