About The Position

The Center for Shock, Trauma and Anesthesiology Research (STAR) and the National Study Center at the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB) is seeking a Research Project Coordinator. This role accomplishes responsibilities by applying specialized and theoretical knowledge, principles, and concepts of a professional discipline normally acquired through advanced education or specialized training. The coordinator resolves issues and significant matters on behalf of management by utilizing independent judgment, discretion, creativity, and analytical thinking. They contribute to the development and evaluation of goals and objectives and create solutions to ensure legal and policy compliance. This position may supervise, mentor, or coordinate the work of others and may independently manage or administer programs, processes, projects, or resources. The role applies entry-level knowledge, concepts, principles, and skills, with decision-making occurring within defined parameters. The supervisor defines assignments, expectations, and deadlines, and may review work for quality. The coordinator demonstrates initiative and discretion to resolve routine and non-routine matters.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in nursing, emergency services, chemistry, biology, public health, psychology or another scientific discipline appropriate to position required.
  • Prior experience in research preferred.
  • Knowledge of position requirements.
  • Knowledge of all applicable requirements, regulations, and laws.
  • Skill in effective use of applicable technology/systems.
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbal and written thoughts, ideas, and facts.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and independently.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinating the day-to-day operations of research studies in the department.
  • Coordinating data maintenance, grant expenditure adherence, project evaluation, meeting scheduling, and research subject interfacing.
  • Serving as a point of contact for study participants, research personnel, and support staff.
  • Adhering to good clinical practices, study protocols, and applicable regulations.
  • Conducting complex work and contributing to measurable team objectives.
  • Using discretion to provide solutions to issues.
  • Performing work that is varied and does not follow prescribed procedures or processes, and being responsible for effective operations and use of resources, rather than clinical outcomes.
  • Independently coordinating and communicating directly with the Principle Investigator, study participants, and sponsors to manage the operation and evaluation activities of the research studies.
  • Ensuring optimum efficiency and compliance with appropriate policies, procedures, and specifications.
  • Using evaluation techniques, originality, and ingenuity to resolve non-routine issues.
  • Recruiting and screening volunteers to participate in research studies.
  • Developing recruitment streams and advising participants of study objectives, requirements, risks, benefits, and obtaining their consent and enrollment.
  • Leading the collection and management of study data by developing data collection instruments, establishing and maintaining databases, and performing data quality checks.
  • Developing and implementing new processes to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of data collection and evaluation.
  • Tracking, reporting, and auditing study data and regulatory study documentation.
  • Supervising those who perform data entry and performing non-routine data analysis.
  • Developing and producing reports of study data for project staff and stakeholders.
  • Analyzing data and drawing conclusions to make recommendations.
  • Reporting study deviations from protocol and communications with IRB.
  • Contributing meaningful information to enhance publications or grant applications.
  • Monitoring activities to ensure compliance with protocols and all relevant local, federal, and state regulatory and institutional policies.
  • Assisting in budget development, expenditure adherence, and maintenance of inventory on equipment and supplies.
  • Obtaining, processing, and transporting specimens to the appropriate laboratory according to established aseptic technique.
  • Performing venipunctures and finger sticks to obtain blood specimens.
  • Performing other related duties as assigned.
