Research Intern – Immunology & Molecular Biology

About The Position

The research laboratory studies immune-mediated mechanisms involved in atherosclerosis and cancer using in vivo models. This internship is designed for an undergraduate student seeking meaningful, hands-on research experience while developing a strong foundation in immunology, molecular biology, and cellular biology. Working under the guidance of experienced laboratory team members, the Research Intern will gain exposure to the scientific research process, including experimental design, laboratory techniques, scientific literature review, data acquisition and analysis, and presentation of research findings. Throughout the internship, the student will receive training in techniques that may include DNA extraction, PCR, electrophoresis, gel documentation, histological sectioning and staining, imaging and documentation of histological samples, data acquisition and analysis, flow cytometry sample preparation, RNA isolation, reverse transcription, quantitative real-time PCR, immunohistochemistry, and cell culture. The internship is structured to progressively build the student’s scientific knowledge, technical proficiency, critical-thinking skills, and ability to communicate scientific findings.

Requirements

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must reside in the greater Los Angeles area or surrounding cities while conducting all activities related to the intern or visitor appointment.

Responsibilities

  • Gain exposure to the scientific research process, including experimental design, laboratory techniques, scientific literature review, data acquisition and analysis, and presentation of research findings.
  • Receive training in techniques that may include DNA extraction, PCR, electrophoresis, gel documentation, histological sectioning and staining, imaging and documentation of histological samples, data acquisition and analysis, flow cytometry sample preparation, RNA isolation, reverse transcription, quantitative real-time PCR, immunohistochemistry, and cell culture.
  • Develop scientific literature-review skills by reading relevant research publications and discussing findings with laboratory team members.
  • Assist with project activities.
  • Prepare and deliver a presentation summarizing research activities supported, experimental findings, and the scientific significance of the work.
  • Lead a journal club discussion by selecting and presenting a scientific publication relevant to the research project.
  • Compile, organize, and analyze experimental data.
  • Deliver a final presentation summarizing research experience, experimental findings, and the significance of the work.
  • Lead an additional journal club presentation.
