About The Position

The Development Economics (DEC) Vice Presidency is the primary hub of the World Bank's knowledge system, generating knowledge, global analysis, and development data to serve member countries and the Bank in economic development and poverty reduction. DEC seeks to increase understanding of development policies and programs by providing intellectual leadership and analytical services. The Development Economics Planet (DECPT) unit within DECRG provides intellectual leadership, technical assistance, and substantive advice on agriculture, environmental management, climate change, and infrastructure. The Land Team within DECRG conducts research, analytical work, and policy dialogue on land governance and supports operational teams in improving land rights security, land markets, and land use.

Requirements

  • PhD in economics or related discipline
  • Track record of economic research on India
  • Strong analytical skills and familiarity with literature on impact evaluation
  • Demonstrated ability to work with survey, administrative, and geospatial data
  • Pipeline of journal publications or publishable work in progress
  • Strong communication and presentation skills
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with policy makers

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with land records and access to finance in India is an advantage
  • Familiarity with the literature on land tenure, institutions, and markets

Responsibilities

  • Support the unit's research efforts in India by taking responsibility for all practical aspects of supporting the implementation of rigorous evaluations of efforts to use land records to increase land owners’ and tenants’ access to finance.
  • Help improve local revenue generation.
  • Enhance the effectiveness of public support to rural areas.
  • Increase adaptation and diversification as well as access to insurance by exploiting the data interoperability inherent in India's Agri-Stack.
  • Maintain dialogue with the CMU and relevant Ministries to monitor implementation of innovative programs on land in a way that is comparable across states.
  • Link these efforts to rigorous impact evaluations wherever possible.
  • Collaborate with local think tanks and Universities to build capacity.
