Summary HII is seeking a highly motivated and technically skilled Research Development Engineer to support the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Energy Academic Group in Monterey, California. The selected candidate will support advanced research initiatives focused on energy systems modeling for planning and operational decision-making in support of Department of Defense (DoD) operational energy, installation energy, resilience, and mission assurance objectives. This position is part-time and is expected to average 80 hours per month. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical and research capabilities with experience in scientific modeling, systems engineering, operational analysis, and interdisciplinary collaboration. This position supports the development and execution of innovative research efforts that inform future operational concepts, energy resilience strategies, and emerging technology applications.

Requirements

  • 9 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 7 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; 4 years relevant experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 13 years relevant experience.
  • Experience supporting research and development efforts involving energy systems, operational analysis, modeling and simulation, or infrastructure planning
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex technical data.
  • Experience with modeling and simulation tools, systems analysis methodologies, and data visualization techniques.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate research activities across multiple organizations and technical disciplines.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including technical briefing and report development.
  • Ability to work independently while supporting collaborative research environments.
  • Familiarity with DoD, Navy, or federal research environments preferred.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD secret clearance.
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen.

Nice To Haves

  • Current or active DoD clearance preferred.
  • Experience supporting operational energy or installation energy initiatives within the DoD.
  • Knowledge of mission assurance, energy resilience, microgrids, distributed energy resources, or infrastructure optimization.
  • Experience with systems-of-systems analysis, MBSE methodologies, or operational planning frameworks.
  • Familiarity with data analytics, AI/ML applications for operational decision support, or advanced simulation environments.
  • Experience supporting academic research organizations, federally funded research programs, or defense experimentation initiatives.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct advanced research and development activities related to energy systems modeling, operational energy analysis, and infrastructure resilience.
  • Develop analytical models, simulations, and decision-support tools for energy planning and operational assessments.
  • Support the design, development, execution, and implementation of scientific research projects aligned with DoD and Navy operational requirements.
  • Analyze complex energy and infrastructure systems to identify trends, relationships, vulnerabilities, and optimization opportunities.
  • Develop theories, methodologies, and frameworks for understanding and organizing natural and engineered systems into meaningful research models.
  • Coordinate interdisciplinary research efforts among government personnel, academic faculty, engineers, and industry partners.
  • Prepare technical reports, white papers, briefings, and research publications for senior leadership and stakeholders.
  • Participate in intellectual property evaluations, technology transition efforts, and patent application development where applicable.
  • Support experimentation, operational analysis, and modeling activities associated with emerging energy technologies and mission systems.
  • Contribute to strategic planning initiatives supporting operational energy and installation resilience objectives across the DoD enterprise.
  • Maintain awareness of evolving technologies, scientific methodologies, and federal energy initiatives relevant to mission execution.
