Summary HII is seeking a highly qualified Research Developer Engineer/ Principal Investigator to support the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS) Energy Academic Group in Monterey, California. The selected candidate will provide advanced research, engineering innovation, professional education development, and strategic advisory efforts supporting Department of Defense operational and installation energy initiatives. This part-time position will average 10 - 20 hours per week.

Requirements

  • 5 years relevant experience with Bachelors in related field; 3 years relevant experience with Masters in related field; 0 years experience with PhD or Juris Doctorate in related field; or High School Diploma or equivalent and 9 years relevant experience.
  • Demonstrated experience serving as a Principal Investigator or senior technical lead on complex research initiatives.
  • Strong background in Operational Energy (OE), Installation Energy (IE), infrastructure resilience, or facilities engineering.
  • Experience working with/on multidisciplinary technical teams, faculty, researchers, and interns.
  • Demonstrated expertise in Civil Systems Engineering (CSE) and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) concepts and methodologies.
  • Experience developing and delivering professional education, technical training, or academic curriculum.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including executive-level briefings and technical reporting.
  • Ability to interface effectively with DoD leadership, government sponsors, academic institutions, and research organizations.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a DoD Secret Clearance

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting Naval Postgraduate School, Department of Defense, Department of Energy, or federal research organizations.
  • Familiarity with defense infrastructure modernization, energy resilience, smart installations, and mission assurance initiatives.
  • Experience advising DoD acquisition, engineering, or operational program offices.
  • Published research, technical papers, or recognized contributions within energy, engineering, or systems disciplines.
  • Experience with digital engineering environments and advanced modeling/simulation tools.
  • Active DoD security clearance

Responsibilities

  • Serve as Principal Investigator leading research initiatives focused on facilities planning, infrastructure modernization, energy resilience, and project development.
  • Lead and manage the Energy Engineering and Innovation Research Team consisting of faculty, researchers, interns, and technical contributors.
  • Direct research efforts supporting Operational Energy (OE) and Installation Energy (IE) initiatives across Department of Defense mission areas.
  • Develop and advance Civil Systems Engineering (CSE) methodologies and Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) applications supporting defense and infrastructure programs.
  • Design, development, and delivery of professional education offerings, executive courses, workshops, and academic content supporting energy and engineering disciplines.
  • Advise DoD program offices, government leadership, and stakeholders on energy strategy, infrastructure resilience, systems engineering, and emerging technology solutions.
  • Conduct strategic analysis, technical assessments, and research reporting supporting defense energy transformation initiatives.
  • Support proposal development, research planning, technical briefings, and executive-level communications.
  • Ensure research quality, technical rigor, schedule execution, and alignment with sponsor objectives.
