About The Position

The Lane Department of Computer Science and Electrical Engineering at West Virginia University is seeking a Research Associate to join the AI+Health Engineering Center (AI+HEC). AI+HEC is a collaborative research center focused on improving health and well-being by accelerating decision-making for intelligent health applications through advanced AI techniques and the analysis of massive, heterogeneous biomedical datasets. The center aims to develop new algorithms and techniques using AI, machine learning, and large language models to analyze various biomedical data, with an emphasis on high-resolution pathology images, cardiac images (echocardiographs, MRI, CT), and secure, privacy-preserving health data analytics. The Research Associate will conduct research in these areas, with the opportunity to influence the direction of their research projects based on their interests and the center's collaborative goals. This role contributes to workforce development in data science, AI, and digital health.

Requirements

  • PhD in computer science, electrical engineering, computer engineering, biomedical engineering, applied mathematics, physics, or a related field.
  • Familiarity with machine learning/deep learning/data analytics and large language models.
  • Proficiency in scientific computing using one or more of the major programming languages/environments (python, PyTorch, Matlab, C/C++, or R).

Nice To Haves

  • Strong background in computer vision.
  • Experience with generative AI.
  • Expertise in high-resolution histopathology images and cardiac images.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research on computer vision, deep learning, large language models, generative AI, applied mathematics, bioinformatics, and biomedical image analysis.
  • Develop new algorithms and techniques using advances in AI, machine learning, and large language models to analyze biomedical data.
  • Analyze high-resolution pathology images and cardiac images (echocardiographs, MRI, CT images, etc.).
  • Contribute to secured and privacy-preserving health data analytics.
  • Determine the specific direction of their research project in collaboration with other researchers, within the scope of the center's projects.
