About The Position

Join an exciting, multidisciplinary PhD program that offers hands-on training from day one, bridging cutting-edge laboratory science with clinical research. We are seeking motivated and dedicated doctoral students for the Neuroscience Ph.D. program at the Roskamp Institute, which currently has openings for a 4-year Ph.D. project in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) research. Roskamp Institute projects are all focused on translational research, with analysis of clinical samples to define the conditions under investigation, and extensive characterization of relevant preclinical models in order to identify and develop diagnostic strategies and therapeutic targets. This PhD student will join our translational team investigating the mechanisms by which genetic and metabolic factors influence cerebrovascular decline and late-onset Alzheimer’s disease (LOAD). Our research integrates cross-scale validation using pharmacologic and genetic interventions in novel LOAD mouse models, complemented by our cutting-edge 3D humanized cell-based microfluidic Brain-Chip platform.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in a scientific field, or a Bachelor’s degree with demonstrated scientific laboratory experience.

Responsibilities

  • Culturing and analysis of cellular and microfluidic brain-chip samples
  • Tissue-specific isolation, culturing, and analysis of rodent samples
  • Mutagenic and environmental risk factors on a humanized mouse platform of LOAD
  • Antibody-based analytical approaches - immunoblotting, ELISA, and MSD assays
  • Activity assays - metabolic measurements, oxidative stress, and antioxidant defenses
  • Rodent manipulation including glymphatic, cerebrovascular, and behavioral studies
  • Blood brain barrier analysis – permeability, leukocyte adhesion, waste elimination
  • Cerebrovascular analysis - capillary stalling, hypoperfusion, blood flow, and reactivity
  • Neuropathological and angioarchitectural analyses – microscopy, immunohistochemistry
