About The Position

This is a new position for a Research Assistant within the Faculty of Social Sciences, Department of Criminology at the University of Ottawa. The role involves conducting bail court observations and coding data related to these observations. The position is for the Spring/Summer 2026 semester and is classified under CUPE 2626.

Requirements

  • Graduate-level knowledge of the operation of bail court in Canada.
  • Knowledge of relevant legislative, judicial, policy, and scholarly research/literature on bail court.
  • A minimum of 85-100 hours of bail court observations conducted in an Ontario bail court.
  • Direct experience in the collection, coding, and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data on the routine processing of bail court cases (including first appearance cases and show cause hearings).
  • General knowledge of international trends and practices.
  • Experience with SPSS/STATA.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out 100 hours of bail court observations in both video remand court and show cause hearings in the Ottawa Courthouse.
  • Code preliminary quantitative and qualitative data on the processing and outcomes of observed bail cases.
