Student - Research Assistant - Edge AI / Embedded Systems

Utah Valley University•Main Campus - Orem, UT

About The Position

Support a faculty-led, grant-funded undergraduate research project developing and testing environmental-sound classification and basic noise-reduction methods on edge-computing hardware. The assistant will work with audio datasets, Python-based machine learning, an NVIDIA Jetson platform, and a ZCU104 FPGA development board under faculty supervision. This is a temporary student position with an anticipated project period from November 2026 through April 2027, subject to hiring authorization and available grant funding.

Requirements

  • Must be a current UVU student.
  • Must be enrolled in an ECE, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, or related STEM-field major.
  • Basic understanding of computer programming and an interest in machine learning, digital signal processing, or computer/electrical engineering.
  • Ability to write or learn simple Python scripts, manage data files, test and debug code, use development tools, keep organized research notes, and communicate results clearly.
  • Ability to learn new software and hardware tools; follow laboratory and data-handling procedures; work independently and with a faculty supervisor; meet agreed project milestones; and document results carefully.
  • Ability to learn research methods and document experiments accurately.

Nice To Haves

  • Python or programming background.
  • Interest in machine learning, audio processing, and embedded devices.
  • Prior familiarity with Python is helpful. Prior Jetson or FPGA experience is not required.

Responsibilities

  • Prepare and organize environmental audio datasets.
  • Assist with preprocessing, sound-classification models, and basic noise-reduction experiments using Python and standard machine-learning tools.
  • Assist with deploying and testing research code on NVIDIA Jetson and ZCU104 FPGA hardware, including setup, debugging, and reproducible test runs under supervision.
  • Measure and compare prediction accuracy, inference time, power and energy use, memory, and hardware-resource usage; record and summarize findings.
  • Maintain code, data logs, and experiment documentation.
