This position provides a variety of duties to support the departmental needs. Depending on the intern assignment, tasks can vary from laboratory and research assistance. The candidate will work under the direct supervision of the Lab Director to support specific research objectives, lab maintenance, and administrative tasks in the Laboratory of Genital Tract Biology. The research mission of the Laboratory of Genital Tract Biology is to advance women’s health. The Lab Director has NIH funding to study mechanisms of innate immunity to sexually transmitted infections (STI) in the female genital tract and also conducts translational studies on microbicide development for STI prevention and biomarkers of vaginal inflammation relevant to reproductive disorders and cancer. The laboratory is accredited by the Commission of Laboratory Accreditation of the College of American Pathologists. The Undergraduate CO-OP Technical Research Assistant position involves performance of multiple laboratory techniques and tasks, e.g., meticulous record keeping, cataloging clinical specimens, processing vaginal specimens and blood, multiplex protein and mRNA assays, cell culture, etc. The research is performed under routine lab biosafety rules (biohazard level 2, e.g., work with human material). The successful candidate is encouraged to participate in writing and co-authoring research papers and presentations.
