About The Position

The Transportation Research at McGill (TRAM) research group, located within McGill University’s School of Urban Planning, invites applications for a Research Assistant 2 (RA2). The RA2 will report to lab director and principal investigator Prof. Ahmed El-Geneidy. The incumbent will be managing and coordinating various projects led by Prof. El-Geneidy, but will be mostly concentrating on the federally funded project examining the impacts of Montreal’s Réseau express métropolitain (REM) light-rail funded by Canadian Institute of Health Research and (CIHR) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC), and a second project Linking accessibility measures to individuals' behavior and wellbeing in the Canadian context funded by Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). Among other things, the incumbent will help lead surveys, in-person interviews, data collection, and analysis, and partner coordination.

Requirements

  • Master’s degree in urban planning or a related field
  • Education background in the connections between land use and transportation.
  • Demonstrated experience in grant and report writing.
  • Demonstrated experience in quantitative data analysis (using R and GIS).
  • Demonstrated experience in project management and coordination.
  • Excellent written and oral communication in English and French.
  • Mastery of Adobe Illustrator and Adobe InDesign.
  • Excellent personal time management and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated capability to work effectively within a multi-disciplinary team environment.
  • Authorized to work in Canada and willing to work in the province of Quebec.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English verbally and in writing.

Responsibilities

  • Conducts research with minimal supervision on the effects of transportation projects such as the REM and the Pie-IX BRT on land use and business performance and any other projects under the scope of the research proposals.
  • Oversees and assists with the development and execution of surveys, including upcoming waves of the Montreal Mobility Survey (MMS), upcoming waves of the High Speed Rail (HSR) survey, a survey aimed at understanding practitioners’ use of accessibility and perceived accessibility in the workplace, and any other data collection or survey design to achieve the goals outlined in research proposals.
  • Assists graduate and undergraduate students working on project assignments related to land value changes and gentrification around transit lines, satisfaction with various transit modes, analyzing accessibility measures' ability to predict travel behaviour, tracking built environment changes around the REM, and any other student projects.
  • Analyzes and interprets research data and disseminates the results. Writes research papers and reports, policy briefs, and educational videos.
  • Assists with the preparation of grant applications for the Trans-Atlantic Platform – Preparing for Tomorrow grant and any other new grant opportunities that arise.
  • Performs various administrative tasks related to the project, such as organizing meetings with knowledge users and presenting research findings.
  • May also perform tasks of Research Assistant 1.
