About The Position

As part of the Faculty of Engineering’s Office of E-IDEA (Engineering Inclusivity, Diversity, and Equity Advancement), the Teamwork Program partners with faculty and staff to support interpersonal skills development and foster a practical understanding of equity, diversity, and inclusivity (EDI) in the engineering, architecture, and urban planning professions. Our interdisciplinary E-IDEA team is motivated by values of EDI, community building, and transformative teaching and learning. The Research Assistant 1 will work with an interdisciplinary team to advance the project entitled, “Implementation and impact of novel pedagogical tools for assessing teamwork and integrating diverse representation in engineering and design curricula”. This includes contributing to the design, piloting, iterating, and assessing of new and current Teamwork Program resources that support students and staff across the Faculty of Engineering.

Requirements

Bachelor’s degree in STEM education or another relevant discipline
At least two years of work experience relevant to the research project
Strong foundation in intersectional education, psychological safety, and applied principles of social equity, diversity, inclusivity, and accessibility in instructional design
Advanced proficiency in qualitative research methods and analysis including thematic analysis and action research
Intermediate proficiency in quantitative research methods and analysis including statistical analysis
Experience working with digital pedagogical tools (e.g., Vevox, FeedbackFruits, Mural)
Familiarity with web development and content management systems for delivery of learning tools
Advanced in-person group facilitation skills in an experiential learning context
Strong skills leading online and hybrid sessions over Zoom
Effective written and oral communication for both academic and non-academic audiences
Adept in Microsoft Suite, PDF editing software, and citation management software (e.g., EndNote) for managing data, presentations, and other documentation
Strong teamwork and interpersonal skills
Excellent time management skills and ability to balance independent and collaborative tasks
Knowledge of French and English: McGill University is an English-language university where day to day duties may require English communication both verbally and in writing. The level of English required for this position has been assessed at a level 3 (Advanced) on a scale of 0-4.
Authorized to work in Canada and willing to work in the province of Quebec at the campus where the position is based / located.

Responsibilities

Co-organizing pilot studies to implement and improve pedagogical and teamwork tools developed by the Teamwork Program to support students and staff.
Contributing to study design, collaboration meetings, technical training on the use of tools, data collection and interpretation, and iteration of tools.
Collecting and analyzing data on the effectiveness of current Teamwork Program tools through interviews, questionnaires, and / or focus groups.
Preparing reports on research progress and recommendations for improvement.
Maintaining and updating online pedagogical tools including website databases and content delivered through learning management systems.
Researching EDI considerations in technical STEM environments and using these findings to design interpersonal skill-building workshops for both curricular and extra-curricular applications.
Dialogic facilitation and co-facilitation in diverse group contexts with student and staff participants.
Scheduling, planning, and leading highly interactive sessions and developing facilitation approaches based on feedback.
Contributing to academic and non-academic publications and presenting pedagogical tools and related data within conferences, academic networks, and Communities of Practice to share expertise with other researchers and practitioners in higher education and related environments.
