About The Position

Gibson Dunn is a leading global law firm known for its creative legal strategies in significant transactions and disputes. The Research and Information Management (RIM) Department supports the firm's attorneys and staff by providing research assistance and managing research subscriptions and resources. This department values flexibility, quality, customer service, teamwork, and supporting firm and department goals in a fast-paced environment. The Research Analyst, based in New York or Washington D.C., will deliver comprehensive research services across all practice areas, support the business development team, and contribute to the firm's AI initiatives. The role requires expertise in legal research databases and library systems, strong communication and analytical skills, and an interest in innovation and technology. The position reports to the D.C. Research Manager.

Requirements

  • Masters in Library Science (MLS) or equivalent, or JD preferred.
  • A minimum of four years related experience providing research services in a law firm or professional services organization.
  • Thorough knowledge of professional library science and research techniques using various resources required.
  • Proficient in the use of various legal research databases such as Lexis+, Westlaw Precision, CoCounsel, Bloomberg Law, VitalLaw, FactSet, Lex Machina, Trellis, PACER, Hoovers, and other related resources.

Nice To Haves

  • AmLaw 100 law firm experience preferred.
  • Experience utilizing Quest as a centralized ticketing system for incoming research requests a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Conducting in-depth legal research across all practice groups for firm attorneys in accordance with requested specifications, preparing comprehensive analysis of research results and delivering research in a timely fashion. This includes utilizing AI tools to provide insights and data-driven research results.
  • Proactively responding to incoming research assignments, ensuring strong communication, timeliness, thoroughness, and accuracy.
  • Working closely with the RIM Team to provide quality coverage for all offices and assist with ad-hoc research tasks and projects as required.
  • Establishing individual and group alerts for attorneys with available resources.
  • Conducting client development research support, including background checks and competitive intelligence on current or potential clients and markets.
  • Providing services to obtain documents from courts, either directly from available online resources or through third party vendors providing document retrieval assistance, from both federal and state courts as well as various governmental agencies at the state and federal level.
  • Staying abreast of new products and services, attending demos, participating in trials, resource evaluations, and product recommendations.
  • Remaining current on research techniques and available resources relevant to providing high quality research and information services.
