The student will assist with research on transmission-line outage data and cascading failures in electric power systems. Duties include analyzing high-resolution historical outage records, working with transmission-network models, and studying the temporal and spatial clustering of outage events including environment covariates that induce those extreme events. Specific responsibilities include performing statistical and computational analysis of outage data, identifying patterns associated with heavy-tailed outage and cascade behavior, integrating outage datasets with high-resolution weather data, and examining how weather, network topology, and operating conditions relate to outage clustering. The student will also help develop analytical methods and research frameworks to improve understanding of large outage events and cascading failures in real transmission systems.
