About The Position

The Prenatal Reporting Clinical Laboratory Scientist (RCLS) contractor performs high-complexity clinical laboratory data analysis, reviews and interprets molecular diagnostic and sequencing results, and ensures patient results are accurate, reliable, and reported on time in accordance with laboratory procedures and applicable regulations. The role independently runs validated bioinformatics pipelines, evaluates results and quality-control metrics, troubleshoots issues, and reviews and releases reports within authorized procedures. For complex or unusual findings, the RCLS collaborates with Bioinformatics, Laboratory Directors, and other appropriate clinical personnel. The RCLS also provides technical leadership through scientific judgment, investigation of complex analytical issues, guidance to colleagues, staff training, and process-improvement work. The position collaborates with Laboratory Operations, Bioinformatics, Quality Assurance Management, Genetic Counselors, Laboratory Directors, and other teams to support accurate reporting and efficient workflows. It requires attention to detail, analytical and problem-solving skills, strong communication, initiative, adaptability, and the ability to manage competing priorities independently and collaboratively. This is a hybrid role requiring approximately 60% on-site presence—three days per week at the Union City and/or Menlo Park offices—and two days per week remote. The target hourly rate is $65.

Requirements

  • Active and valid California CLS or Clinical Genetic Molecular Biologist Scientist (CGMBS) license, or an appropriate license to practice medicine, osteopathy, or podiatry under the specified California Business and Professions Code provisions for the specialty performed.
  • Bachelor’s degree or higher in Biomedical Laboratory Sciences, Clinical Laboratory Science, Molecular Biology, Genetics, or a related scientific discipline, consistent with applicable licensure requirements.
  • At least one year of clinical laboratory experience or equivalent experience in a high-complexity, high-volume molecular diagnostic clinical laboratory environment.
  • Working knowledge of molecular biology principles, clinical laboratory testing methodologies, and applicable local, state, and federal laboratory regulations.
  • Experience analyzing sequencing data, including evaluating and interpreting next-generation sequencing (NGS) results and associated analytical quality-control metrics under validated laboratory procedures.
  • Ability to independently analyze complex laboratory data, investigate discrepancies, and troubleshoot issues affecting test performance or reporting accuracy.
  • Familiarity with bioinformatics analysis outputs and their application to clinical molecular diagnostic reporting.
  • Strong computer skills and ability to use laboratory data-management systems and analytical software.
  • Proficiency with Atlassian Suite, Google Workspace, and Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Strong analytical judgment, attention to detail, organization, and problem-solving skills, with commitment to accurate and reliable clinical reporting.
  • Ability to independently manage reporting responsibilities, prioritize competing demands, and adapt to changing operational needs while maintaining quality and turnaround-time expectations.
  • Initiative and accountability in investigating technical issues, identifying solutions, and exercising judgment about consultation and escalation.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills and ability to provide technical guidance and collaborate across multidisciplinary teams.
  • Receptiveness to feedback and commitment to continuous learning, professional development, and process improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Execute established and validated bioinformatics pipelines to process and analyze molecular diagnostic data from patient samples.
  • Review and interpret clinical genomic data, sequencing results, bioinformatics outputs, and associated quality-control metrics against established standards and reporting criteria.
  • Investigate and troubleshoot analytical discrepancies, unusual findings, and data-quality issues, working with Bioinformatics and other technical teams as needed.
  • Manage daily sample-analysis priorities, monitor workflows, and communicate issues that may affect accuracy or turnaround times.
  • Review, verify, and release clinical laboratory reports under established procedures, personnel authorization, and applicable regulatory requirements.
  • Collaborate with RCLSs, Bioinformatics, Genetic Counselors, Laboratory Directors, and other clinical personnel to evaluate complex findings and resolve reporting discrepancies.
  • Maintain the accuracy, completeness, and consistency of reports and meet established quality and turnaround-time expectations.
  • Document analytical reviews, quality assessments, investigations, and reporting decisions accurately.
  • Communicate reporting concerns and unresolved issues promptly to appropriate personnel.
  • Exercise sound scientific judgment and investigate complex analytical discrepancies, troubleshoot issues, and identify solutions or escalation pathways.
  • Provide technical guidance to Reporting CLS colleagues and support consistent use of analytical and reporting procedures.
  • Assist with training, onboarding, and mentoring Reporting CLS personnel and other clinical laboratory staff.
  • Promote technical competency, reporting consistency, and adherence to laboratory procedures and quality standards.
  • Identify opportunities to improve reporting accuracy, workflow efficiency, and laboratory performance.
  • Participate in technical leadership activities, investigations, validation projects, and workflow improvements as assigned.
  • Perform and support quality-control and quality-assurance activities.
  • Ensure compliance with CLIA, CAP, California state regulations, and laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Identify, document, and investigate quality issues, nonconforming results, and procedural deviations.
  • Support root-cause investigations, corrective and preventive actions, and continuous quality-improvement initiatives with Quality Management and laboratory leadership.
  • Maintain records in accordance with quality-management and regulatory requirements.
  • Recommend ways to optimize analytical workflows, reporting accuracy, operational efficiency, and cost-effective laboratory practices.
