About The Position

Courier Newsroom is seeking a Freelance Reporter for its Colorado newsroom, Courier Colorado. The reporter will produce original political reporting on a story-by-story basis, connecting federal, state, and local policy decisions to the real lives of Colorado residents. The goal is to advance Courier's pro-democracy coverage by delivering up to 6 stories per month focused on Colorado politics, policy, and civic life, with an emphasis on how these issues affect everyday people. Responsibilities include refining angles, incorporating feedback, meeting journalistic standards, conducting research, interviews, fact-checking, and outreach to community members, experts, and political actors.

Requirements

• Lives in Colorado
• 3+ years of reporting experience in journalism, with a focus on politics, policy, or public affairs (state and local experience strongly preferred)
• Demonstrated ability to consistently report, write, and file well-researched, thoroughly reported stories.
• Strong reporting and writing skills, including sourcing, interviewing, research, and fact-checking, with a commitment to COURIER’s journalistic standards and style
• Deep familiarity with Colorado’s politics, institutions, and key issues
• Alignment with COURIER’s mission to provide fact-based, people-centered reporting that strengthens civic participation and democracy

Responsibilities

• Conduct rigorous research, interviews, and fact-checking, including outreach to impacted community members, subject-matter experts, and key political actors.
