About The Position

CBC NL is seeking an exceptional journalist and a self-starter who can analyze a broad range of issues and thrive in the fast-paced, high-pressure world of a multi-platform newsroom. The ideal candidate will be proficient in writing, editing, and packaging digital news, comfortable chasing and developing their own stories, and capable of writing stories based on material gathered by colleagues. A keen interest and experience in visual and radio storytelling are also desired, along with an innovative approach to new workflows and story treatments. The role requires an understanding of the diverse and changing population in N.L. and the importance of reflecting a wide range of communities and perspectives in content. The position ensures all CBC journalistic standards are met, producing stories that are fair, balanced, accurate, thoughtful, immediate, and resonate with the communities served. A strong understanding of and/or connection to Indigenous and other equity-deserving communities across the province is essential.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced daily news environment.
  • Sound news judgment and a demonstrated ability to react quickly to breaking news and changing priorities, and chasing multiple stories at once.
  • Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong story ideas that meet the needs of our audiences.
  • A creative mind with an inclusive approach to storytelling: you constantly ask “whose voice is missing?”
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • A demonstrated commitment to exploring treatments and topics that are relevant to 30-49 year old Canadians.
  • An appreciation for different perspectives.
  • An understanding of N.L.’s political landscape, economic drivers and demographics, and a strong proven connection to the communities we serve in across the province.
  • A proven work ethic, strong communication skills and a positive, team-first attitude.
  • Superior writing skills across platforms.
  • Knowledge of emerging storytelling formats and willingness to embrace change and new tasks across all CBC platforms.
  • A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence and a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of three years of recent, related experience.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
  • Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
  • A mandatory Criminal record check.
  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Respond quickly to breaking news events — chasing, gathering, writing and packaging stories for digital, radio and visual programming.
  • Distill large amounts of complex information under tight time constraints.
  • Pitch, research, write and package original stories for all platforms that will engage and inform the audience, deepen our community connections and elevate a range of voices.
  • Build and package digital stories with multimedia content.
  • Monitor news developments to maintain content on CBC N.L.'s website that reflects the latest news and varied content of interest to our audiences.
  • Assist in curating the cbc.ca/nl website and news app lineup when needed.
  • Cultivate and develop working relationships with a large pool of sources and contacts.
  • Report from the field and collaborate with colleagues across platforms, teams and locations.
