About The Position

CBC Edmonton is seeking an experienced news editor/presenter to lead weekday afternoon newscasts for radio and digital platforms. This role involves gathering, preparing, and presenting daily news for Edmonton and northern Alberta, and collaborating with the Radio Active team. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced, high-pressure live news environment, is adept at handling breaking news under tight deadlines, and understands the importance of diverse perspectives in media. The position requires adherence to CBC journalistic standards for fairness, balance, accuracy, and immediacy. This role requires full-time on-site presence and is a temporary, 18-month position.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience working in a fast-paced daily news environment.
  • Ability to generate, pitch and pursue strong, original story ideas.
  • Strong news judgment and a demonstrated ability to react quickly to breaking news and changing priorities, and chase multiple stories at once.
  • Excellent critical thinking skills, including knowledge of the legal and ethical issues related to journalism.
  • Engaging on-air presence, a strong presentation style and an ease with live, on-air work.
  • Ability to present material with credibility and authority in a range of situations including live events and breaking news.
  • Ability to quickly cut audio clips from a variety of audio and video sources.
  • Superior script writing and script edging skills.
  • An understanding of Alberta’s political landscape, economic drivers and demographics, and a strong proven connection to the communities we serve in and around Edmonton.
  • A proven work ethic, strong communication skills and a positive, team-first attitude.
  • A strong desire to live and promote the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.
  • Possession of a valid driver’s licence as well as a driving record that meets the minimum requirements of CBC/Radio-Canada's insurance company.
  • University degree in journalism or equivalent with a minimum of four years of recent, related experience.
  • Ability and willingness to work flexible hours as required.
  • Candidates may be subject to skills and knowledge testing.
  • Mandatory Criminal record check.
  • Other background checks may be conducted based on the operational requirements of the position.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, line up and deliver newscasts and news breaks
  • Collaborate with journalists across platforms and programs to chase breaking news and ensure newscasts are up-to-date
  • Write and edit scripts; cut audio clips and package stories
  • Conduct interviews on and off air
  • Self-operate the studio audio board during live newscasts
  • Vet scripts written by other journalists, providing feedback and coaching to help them develop their skills and produce content of the highest quality
  • Interact live on air with hosts and program participants
  • Present newscasts on other platforms (streaming, podcasts, digital, video) as required
