About The Position

At CBC/Radio-Canada, we create content that informs, entertains and connects Canadians on multiple platforms. We are looking for a Reporter/Editor to join our digital team in Whitehorse, Yukon. This role requires full-time on-site presence. The successful candidate is passionate about local news and community story-telling. You understand the Yukon’s rapidly changing population and the importance of reflecting all our communities in our digital content. You know the people, communities and culture of the Yukon. You believe in an inclusive approach to journalism. You will help enhance CBC Yukon’s connection to the audience by helping us reach younger audiences and underserved communities. You thrive in working as part of a team and cooperating with the rest of the newsroom, including CBC Yukon’s various platforms. You live the values of diversity, and promote an inclusive and respectful work culture. You’re comfortable writing stories for the CBC Yukon website with interviews, research and material gathered by other CBC journalists - reporters or videojournalists, radio hosts, associate producers, etc. You maintain exceptional skill in writing, editing and packaging for a digital audience. You thrive in a fast-paced environment, know what to include in a story (and what to leave out). You can also write, edit and perform content for radio and video platforms. You are knowledgeable about CBC journalistic and programming policies, standards and practices. You demonstrate initiative and independent judgment.

Requirements

  • University degree or equivalent experience.
  • Minimum two years of reporting experience, including proven knowledge of digital content management systems.
  • Demonstrated understanding of digital publishing trends and audience habits.
  • Knowledge of reporting and writing daily news stories.
  • Ability to adapt to a changing media landscape.
  • Ability to work as part of a team.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Attention to detail.
  • Commitment to including all equity-deserving groups in our storytelling.
  • Demonstrate the values of diversity and an inclusive and respectful work culture.

Nice To Haves

  • Knowledge of the political & cultural landscape of the Yukon is an asset.

Responsibilities

  • Writes, edits, packages, and publishes digital content including text stories, video and audio.
  • Prepares and writes articles and headlines for the website from information gathered by reporters, from wire copy, or from original sources.
  • Selects photos and video/audio clips to accompany online stories.
  • Ensures the website and stories adhere to the priorities of the day.
  • Chases developing and breaking news.
  • Re-writes material as necessary to make it more relevant to digital audiences.
  • Tells stories clearly and concisely.
  • Coordinates with the rest of the newsroom, including our assignment desk.
  • Contributes and pitches story ideas that align with CBC News objectives.
