Reporter, Cloud Computing

Dow JonesSan Francisco, CA

About The Position

The Wall Street Journal is seeking an ambitious, scoop-driven and technically sophisticated reporter to lead our coverage of the cloud computing and AI infrastructure beat. This is a high-impact role at the center of the most critical narrative in modern business: the race to build the foundation of the artificial intelligence era. The canvas for this job is vast, covering the cloud businesses of the biggest technology companies as well as neoclouds, massive data center projects, chips and energy. We are looking for a reporter who can pierce the corporate veil of the hyperscalers and the hardware ecosystem, delivering a steady cadence of market-moving news alongside agenda-setting, long-form enterprise reporting. The ideal candidate possesses the tenacity to source executives and engineers within the most secretive corners of the industry and the creativity to turn at times technical, wonky reporting into memorable scoops and features. We are looking for a reporter fascinated by this critical moment in the AI boom who has the analytical depth to explain how shifts in chip architecture or data center power availability are reshaping global markets and corporate strategy.

Requirements

  • At least five years of professional journalism experience with a proven track record of dominating a highly competitive business or tech beat.
  • A comprehensive understanding of the modern cloud business—including SaaS, IaaS, data centers, server architecture, and the semiconductor industry—and how these sectors influence one another.
  • Demonstrated ability to find original angles on stories the entire world is watching and a history of unearthing fresh, high-stakes information through aggressive sourcing and document diving.
  • The ability to provide high-level, accurate briefings on breaking news under extreme pressure, while simultaneously managing complex, long-term enterprise projects.
  • A collaborative spirit and a desire to work across time zones and subject areas to ambitiously cover this critical beat for our sophisticated, global readership.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver a steady stream of scoops on cloud strategy, AI hardware roadmaps, and the competitive shifts among the major hyperscalers (AWS, Microsoft, Google, Oracle) and their partners.
  • Develop and maintain deep sourcing across the executive ranks, infrastructure engineers, and rank and file employees to reveal internal strategy and decision-making.
  • Execute deeply reported, long-form enterprise work on AI infrastructure—from the geopolitics of the chip supply chain to the economic impacts of massive data center expansion.
  • Find smart, unexpected insights that advance breaking news, explaining how deep-tech developments impact market valuations and enterprise IT spending.
  • Partner with our Washington-based national security teams to track the intersection of cloud/AI infrastructure and digital sovereignty.

Benefits

  • Comprehensive and competitive benefits package covering health, retirement, wellbeing, and more, along with optional benefits to meet the diverse needs of our employees.
