About The Position

Petco is hiring a relief veterinarian to work in Vetco Vaccination Clinics and/or Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. The role offers flexible online scheduling, with no minimum or maximum number of shifts, a range of weekday and weekend hours, and the ability to set a rate for each shift. Veterinarians may continue practice activities outside Petco shifts, and Petco does not charge agency fees. An appointment-based model helps manage patient flow, while trained staff handle clinic operations so veterinarians can focus on care. Relief veterinarians receive clinic news, policy updates, and product announcements through a monthly newsletter, as well as a 15% discount on Petco products and services.

Vetco Vaccination Clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement. They do not provide surgeries, emergency care, or illness care. Locations are primarily in Petco stores, with some in mobile van units. Vetco Total Care hospitals provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures. Hospital equipment includes digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and fully equipped surgery suites. Hospital shifts do not involve overnight or emergency on-call duties.

New York state bid rates average $150.00–$187.00 per hour. Shift rates may vary by clinic location and shift duration.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.
• State veterinary license in good standing.
• Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
• DEA registration in good standing for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• Ability to provide professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
• Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.

Responsibilities

• Provide veterinary care during selected relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics and/or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• At vaccination clinics, provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
• At full-service hospitals, provide services including preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures, as appropriate to the shift.
• Meet applicable requirements and mandates for the functions performed during each shift.
