About The Position

Petco Veterinary Services is hiring a relief veterinarian to work in either Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. Vaccination Clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement; they do not provide surgeries, emergency care, or illness care. They are primarily located in Petco stores, with some operating from mobile van units. Vetco Total Care hospitals offer preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures, supported by specialized equipment and trained hospital staff. These roles do not require overnight or emergency on-call shifts.

Relief veterinarians can schedule shifts online with no minimum or maximum shift requirement and may choose from weekday and weekend hours. Veterinarians set their own rate for each shift, may continue practice activities outside Petco shifts, and do not pay agency fees. An appointment-based model and experienced staff support patient flow and clinic operations, allowing veterinarians to focus on care. Petco provides a monthly newsletter with clinic news, policy updates, and product announcements, plus a 15% discount on Petco products and services. New Jersey state bid rates average $136–$170 per hour; rates may vary by clinic location and shift duration.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine state license in good standing.
• Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all functions required during the shift, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
• DEA registration in good standing for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• Professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
• Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.

Responsibilities

• Provide veterinary care during selected relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• At Vaccination Clinics, perform basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
• At Vetco Total Care hospitals, provide services that may include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
• Perform blood draws and administer vaccines as required for the shift.
