About The Position

Petco Veterinary Services offers relief veterinarians work in two settings: Vetco Vaccination Clinics and Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. Vaccination clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement; they do not provide surgery, emergency, or illness care. They are primarily located inside Petco stores, with some operating from advanced mobile vans. Vetco Total Care hospitals provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures, using equipment such as digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and fully equipped surgery suites. Hospital staff are licensed and trained, and relief shifts do not include overnight or emergency on-call work.

Relief veterinarians can schedule shifts online and choose shifts that suit their lifestyle, with no minimum or maximum number of shifts required. Weekday and weekend hours are available. Veterinarians set their own rate for each shift, may continue practice activities outside Petco shifts, and do not pay agency fees. An appointment-based model helps manage patient flow and support on-time departures, while trained staff handle clinic operations. Petco provides a monthly newsletter with clinic news, policy updates, and product announcements, plus a 15% discount on Petco products and services.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine state license in good standing.
• Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including the ability to perform blood draws and administer vaccines.
• Professional Liability Insurance and a license defense policy.
• Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.

Nice To Haves

• DEA registration in good standing is required for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.

Responsibilities
