About The Position

Petco Veterinary Services relief veterinarians work in either Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care full-service veterinary hospitals. Flexible online scheduling lets veterinarians choose shifts that suit their lifestyle, with no minimum or maximum shift requirement and weekday and weekend hours available. Veterinarians set their own rate for each shift and may continue practice activities outside Petco shifts without agency fees. The appointment-based model helps manage patient flow and support on-time departures, while trained staff handle clinic operations so veterinarians can focus on care. Relief veterinarians receive a monthly newsletter with clinic news, policy updates, and product announcements, as well as a 15% discount on Petco products and services.

Vetco Vaccination Clinics provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement. They do not provide surgery, emergency care, or illness care. These clinics are primarily located in Petco stores, with some operating from mobile van units.

Vetco Total Care hospitals provide preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures. Their equipment includes digital dental X-rays, Butterfly IQ+ Vet ultrasound imaging, and surgery suites with heated hydraulic surgery tables and full anesthesia monitoring. Hospital staff are licensed and trained, and shifts do not involve overnight or emergency on-call work.

Requirements

• Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree.
• State veterinary license in good standing.
• Appropriate state-specific licensing to perform all shift functions, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
• Professional liability insurance and a license defense policy.
• Compliance with all local, state, and federal mandates.
• DEA registration in good standing for relief shifts at full-service Vetco Total Care hospitals.

Responsibilities

• Provide veterinary care during relief shifts at Vetco Vaccination Clinics or Vetco Total Care hospitals.
• At vaccination clinics, provide basic wellness checks, vaccinations, heartworm testing, and microchip placement.
• At Vetco Total Care hospitals, provide services that may include preventive care, diagnostic workups, outpatient surgeries, and dental procedures.
• Perform shift functions permitted by applicable state-specific licensing, including blood draws and vaccine administration.
• Comply with local, state, and federal mandates.
