About The Position
Sompo is hiring a Reinsurance Claims Intern for its Reinsurance Claims team in New York, NY. The 10-week internship is a development program intended to support professional growth and may offer a potential long-term opportunity for successful candidates interested in the insurance and reinsurance industry. Interns join the Global Reinsurance Team and gain foundational experience in reinsurance claims, supporting claims arising from the U.S. Reinsurance portfolio. The program includes on-the-job learning, structured leadership development, opportunities to hear from executive leaders, networking with peers and industry participants, and a project presented to the intern’s manager and mentor. The role supports the reinsurance claims team with claims practices, mail processing and triage, data analysis, claims setup reviews, coordination with Underwriting Support and Reinsurance Operations, and special projects. The position is based in Sompo’s New York office. Candidates must be local to the NY/CT/NJ area or provide their own housing and transportation. The salary range is $20–$22; actual compensation depends on factors including work location, qualifications, skills, competencies, and relevant experience.
Requirements
- Currently enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program studying Risk Management, Finance, or a related major.
- Interest in learning niche reinsurance contract and language skills.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Strong analytical, quantitative, and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced team environment with rapidly changing priorities and demands.
- Strong proficiency using Microsoft Office, including Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Must be at least 18 years old and authorized to work in the United States without restriction.
- Must be local to the NY/CT/NJ area or able to provide their own housing and transportation.

Responsibilities
- Learn the Company’s reinsurance claims practices.
- Contribute to and support the reinsurance claims team.
- Assist with processing and triaging mail.
- Assist with analyzing data and statistics.
- Assist with reviewing claims setup in reinsurance systems.
- Liaise with the Underwriting Support Team and Reinsurance Operations on data, systems, and projects within the reinsurance process.
- Assist the team with special projects.
- Participate in a program project and present it to the manager and mentor.
