About The Position

The Regulatory Analyst will help translate complex policy developments into clear guidance, actionable market insights, and practical trading opportunities within Targray’s Environmental Commodities team. This role involves working closely with traders, compliance specialists, and other regulatory team members to understand emerging rules, quantify credit opportunities, manage regulatory risk, and expand into new environmental commodity markets. It is an opportunity to work at the intersection of engineering, energy transition policy, carbon markets, and commodity trading, suitable for someone who enjoys solving complex problems and influencing commercial decisions in a fast-moving market. This position requires 100% presence at Targray Head Office, Monday to Friday.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in engineering required.
  • 1–5 years of experience in energy, sustainability, environmental markets, regulatory analysis, engineering consulting, finance, or data analytics.
  • Strong analytical and critical-thinking skills, with the ability to distill legislation, technical standards, and regulatory guidance into clear business language.
  • Advanced Excel/Sheets skills required; familiarity with SQL, Python, or other data-analysis tools welcomed.
  • Demonstrated ability or strong interest in using generative AI and data-science tools to improve research, analysis, and reporting.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Self-starter who enjoys a fast-paced trading-floor environment and can balance detail-oriented research with commercial urgency.
  • English required.

Nice To Haves

  • Degree in environmental engineering, chemical engineering, mechanical engineering, civil engineering, industrial engineering, or a related engineering discipline preferred.
  • Environmental engineering background is considered a strong asset, but not required.
  • Co-op or internship experience in climate, energy, fuels, carbon markets, or environmental compliance considered an asset.
  • French considered an advantage.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate daily with traders, compliance operations, logistics, and regulatory team members to ensure positions and deal structures align with current regulations.
  • Monitor, interpret, and summarize federal and provincial carbon-pricing, LCFS, clean fuel, and cap-and-trade rules; flag upcoming changes, deadlines, and risks.
  • Investigate and build comparative frameworks for new compliance-credit programs emerging outside Canada, including in U.S. states, Europe, and Asia-Pacific markets.
  • Quantify credit generation and deficit pathways, assess eligibility requirements, and map registry procedures.
  • Maintain a living database of program requirements, compliance timelines, methodologies, and regulatory interpretations.
  • Produce succinct briefing notes, dashboards, and decision memos that highlight market impacts and trading opportunities.
  • Apply engineering judgment to evaluate low-carbon fuel pathways, project eligibility, emissions-intensity calculations, and technical regulatory requirements.
  • Leverage AI-driven research tools, large-language models, policy-text mining, and automated web-scraping to accelerate regulatory intelligence gathering.
  • Build relationships with regulators, auditors, consultants, and industry working groups; represent Targray in public consultations where appropriate.
