About The Position

The Registration Clerk is responsible for pre-registering patients for scheduled admissions and outpatient procedures. This role involves obtaining authorization, verifying insurance, and collecting necessary signatures. The clerk also provides patients with important information regarding hospital policies, patient rights, HIPAA, and visiting hours. Effective communication with patients, families, nursing staff, and other departments is crucial for ensuring patient needs are met and hospital policies are followed.

Responsibilities

  • Pre-registers patients for scheduled admissions and outpatient procedures.
  • Obtains authorization and verifies insurance.
  • Accepts reservations from any physician's office.
  • Obtains signatures on Conditions of Admissions and Authorization for Treatment, and initiates the advance directive process.
  • Communicates with nursing services regarding advance directives.
  • Provides information to patients/representatives about complaint process, patient rights, HIPAA, and visiting hours.
  • Distributes hospital-specific literature.
  • Communicates with the nursing department to ensure patients' valuables are handled appropriately.
  • Communicates appropriately and clearly to supervisor, nurse managers, coworkers, and physicians.
  • Consults other departments as appropriate for an interdisciplinary approach to patient needs.
  • Responsible for knowing hospital policies and being familiar with hospital services.
  • Collects payments when previous arrangements have been made or co-payment is required, and records them.
  • Demonstrates ability to be flexible, organized, and function well in stressful situations.
  • Treats patients and their families with respect and dignity; ensures confidentiality of patients' records.
  • Answers telephone calls promptly and professionally, routing calls appropriately.
  • Greets, directs, and assists patients and visitors as needed.
  • Informs registration/admitting when a patient arrives and screens solicitors.
  • Directs patients/visitors to appropriate waiting areas.
  • Responsible for notification to insurance companies for hospital admissions.
  • Available to work any and all shifts as needed, including holidays and weekends.
