The Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) will demonstrate knowledge in various modes and methods of oxygen delivery and the equipment needed for each, and can conduct prescribed therapeutic procedures to achieve adequate oxygenation. The RRT will administer therapeutic procedures, understanding the purpose and benefits, and possible effects associated with each. They will perform diagnostic procedures as outlined in policy. The RRT will initiate, monitor and maintain mechanical ventilators and non-invasive ventilators and is aware of the critical care duties and effects of such therapy. The RRT will independently evaluate current therapies using appropriate judgment and protocols, making proper recommendations concerning plans of care and patient education needs. They will document therapy and results as required by hospital, department and regulatory agencies. The RRT will communicate information to appropriate members of the healthcare team. They will initiate, conduct and modify respiratory care techniques in an emergency setting. The RRT will perform and evaluate blood sampling analysis with a thorough understanding of the values, and the importance and treatment of abnormal results. The RRT will work independently in all patient care areas and assist co-workers with patient care whenever possible. They will be proficient in the electronic medical records and its interface with the Respiratory Care Department. The RRT will follow departmental safety guidelines, complete all regulatory requirements, and complete annual proficiency evaluation of respiratory care equipment and procedures.
