About the Multispecialty Surgical Unit Located on 11 North at Mount Sinai Hospital, the Multispecialty Surgical Unit is a 32-bed unit that provides care for patients across surgical specialties, including reconstructive orthopaedics, oral-maxillofacial surgery (OMFS), ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgery, urological/oncological gynecology, and ophthalmology. Our unit is characterized by a high volume of surgical patient turnover, with length of stay ranging from 1-2 days to over a week for more complex cases. In addition, we provide care for patients from general internal medicine, general surgery, and gastroenterology. We have a dedicated Charge Nurse with typical patient ratios of 1:4 on day shifts and 1:6 on night shifts. Our cohesive team is dedicated to fostering a collaborative environment that prioritizes patient-centered care and continuous learning.

Requirements

  • Currently registered and in good standing with the College of Nurses of Ontario (CNO)
  • Graduate of a CNO-approved Practical Nursing (PN) program. Equivalent combined education and experience will be considered
  • Current certification in Basic Cardiac Life Support (BCLS)
  • Excellent health and clinical assessment skills
  • Demonstrated ability in providing quality patient-focused care and addressing the fundamental care needs of patients and their families
  • Proven ability to make sound professional judgements and practice decisions, and demonstrate effective time-management and organizational skills in a fast-paced work environment
  • Demonstrated leadership skills
  • Excellent problem solving and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent oral, written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively and collaboratively in interprofessional teams

Nice To Haves

  • 2 years of recent acute care clinical experience

Responsibilities

  • Provide direct patient and family centered care for patients across surgical specialties, including reconstructive orthopaedics, oral-maxillofacial surgery (OMFS), ear, nose, and throat (ENT) surgery, urological/oncological gynecology, and ophthalmology
  • Complete physical assessments on patients
  • Provide direct patient care in accordance to the CNO standards and Sinai Health's policy and procedures
  • Administer medications and provide any necessary care (including, but not limited to wound care, IVs, monitoring drains, prepare patients for procedures, etc.)
  • Attend nursing rounds and participate in patient/family meetings
  • Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, including doctors, pharmacists, social workers, clinical nurse specialists, etc.
  • Apply a broad range of nursing skills and procedures including (but not exclusive to) CADD pumps, chest tubes, nephrostomy tubes, complex wounds, central lines, enteral feeding tubes, TPN, CIWA monitoring, managing a Code Blues, and chemotherapy
  • Participate in the mentoring of learners, peers and other regulated and unregulated health professionals
  • Perform other duties consistent with the job classification as required
