The Registered Nurse in the neonatal ICU practices independently in the same or a similar clinical setting and demonstrates awareness of relevant aspects of each situation. The nurse provides routine and complex care, works toward long-range goals and plans, and continues developing the ability to manage clinical contingencies. The nurse makes appropriate assignments and delegates to other care providers to help manage clinical situations. Consistent with the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, the nurse uses the nursing process—including assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation—to provide care for assigned patients. The role addresses increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families in accordance with the nurse’s level of practice. The nurse administers medications and treatments under the appropriate protocol, monitors for side effects and effectiveness, documents patient history, symptoms, medications, and care, and assesses learning needs to educate patients, families, and caregivers and identify issues and resources. Newly hired experienced RNs must attend New Nurses Orientation within 30 days of hire. New hires are precepted by a designated trained staff member, and onboarding requirements are validated through organizational entry competency validation and Perinatal Services-specific competency validation. Annual competency verification requirements must also be completed.
