The competent Nurse practices independently in the same or a similar clinical setting and demonstrates awareness of relevant aspects of each situation. The Nurse provides routine and complex care, works toward long-range goals or plans, and continues developing the ability to manage clinical contingencies. The role includes making appropriate assignments and delegating to other care providers to help manage the clinical situation. Consistent with the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, the Nurse provides care using the nursing process: assessment, diagnosis, planning, intervention, and evaluation. The Nurse addresses increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families according to the Nurse’s level of practice; administers medications and treatments under appropriate protocols; monitors for side effects and effectiveness; documents patient histories, symptoms, medications, and care; and assesses learning needs and provides education to patients, family members, and caregivers while identifying issues and resources. Newly hired experienced RNs must attend New Nurses Orientation within their first 30 days. New hires receive precepting from a designated trained staff member, and initial onboarding requirements are validated through successful completion of organizational entry competency validation and Perinatal Services-specific competency validation. Annual competency verification requirements must also be completed.
