About The Position

UPMC Presbyterian, a Magnet designated hospital, is currently hiring Full-Time Registered Nurses to support our Surgical/Transplant Units. The Transplant & Inpatient Surgery Division consists of several departments all with a unique surgically based focus. Each unit is staffed by nurses who are specialists in their respective fields and provide compassionate care and clinical excellence. Units include: 10 North/8 West (Specialty Surgical Unit focusing on Gastrointestinal and Liver Surgery, and Head and Neck surgeries), 11 North (Step-down Unit specializing in liver, kidney, pancreas, and intestinal transplants), 9 North (surgical orthopedic and urology department), 5 East West Med Surg (high acuity unit with a primary focus on patients with liver failure), and 11 East/West Inpatient Rehabilitation (supports patients requiring intense therapy for functional mobility and self-care post-organ transplant, stroke, and LVAD).

Requirements

  • Graduate Nurses must be eligible for State Board Licensure and successfully pass the examination before beginning this role OR ability to start with TPP and must obtain license within four months of beginning position.
  • Current Pennsylvania licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse OR current multi-state licensure through the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) OR Temporary Practice Permit (TPP)
  • CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
  • ACLS required within 12 months of beginning employment.
  • Act 34 Criminal Clearance

Responsibilities

  • Provide compassionate care and clinical excellence.
  • Train and work on both 10 North and 8 West units.
  • Focus on Gastrointestinal and Liver Surgery, including colon, gastric, pancreatic cancer, gastrointestinal disorders, liver resections, chemotherapy, and management of common bile duct injuries.
  • Work closely with Palliative Care and Hospice for end-of-life care.
  • Provide state-of-the-art oncology care.
  • Care for patients who have undergone head and neck surgeries including tracheostomy, total laryngectomy, and free flap plastic construction.
  • Regularly use cardiac monitors and pulse oximeters.
  • Care for overflow patients from other surgical areas including GI, orthopedic, and med-surg.
  • Specialize in the care of patients undergoing liver, kidney, pancreas, and intestinal transplants in addition to other complex abdominal surgeries.
  • Become an expert on post-operative transplant patient care, transplant medications, and multifaceted patient/family education.
  • Care for patients with orthopedic trauma, spinal injuries, and injuries/conditions related to the upper extremities as well as urological patients.
  • Serve a diverse patient population with a primary focus on patients with liver failure admitted under the hepatology service.
  • Admit abdominal transplant patients, end-of-life, and post ICU patients as overflow.
  • Support patients who require intense therapy to improve functional mobility and self-care while still requiring medical and nursing care.
  • Specialize in rehab for post-organ transplant, stroke, and LVAD patients.
  • Care for a diverse mix of other diagnoses related to surgical, trauma, oncology, or any illness leading to general debility.
  • Provide direct patient care in a way that enhances and supports skills learned in daily physical, occupational, and speech therapy sessions.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to care for and interact with patients.
  • Apply knowledge of growth and development principles to assess and interpret patient data, identifying age-specific needs.
  • Establish and maintain positive, caring relationships with executives, managers, physicians, non-physician providers, support staff, and patients/families.
  • Work effectively in a complex environment, managing multiple and changing priorities with specialized equipment.
  • Utilize strong clinical judgment, critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills in all aspects of patient care.
