About The Position

The Registered Nurse Assistant Nurse Manager supports the Nurse Manager in overseeing operations of a nursing unit or patient-care area and serves as a key liaison between staff and leadership. The role may serve as the first-line supervisor of nursing personnel in the patient-care area, helping ensure the Nurse Manager retains the responsibilities required by VA Handbook 5007. Supervisory duties may include oversight of nursing assistants and/or licensed practical/vocational nurses, or nursing personnel working evening or night shifts. For employees under direct supervision, the Assistant Nurse Manager approves schedules and leave, appraises performance, recommends performance standards and awards, serves as hiring official during recruitment, and recommends proposed discipline or grievance adjustments. For other unit personnel, the role assists the Nurse Manager by drafting schedules and leave for final approval, providing performance input, and helping recommend candidates for selection. The Assistant Nurse Manager applies clinical knowledge and judgment to lead staff participation in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes, and provides feedback to the Nurse Manager, who is ultimately responsible for ensuring timely nursing care consistent with generally accepted standards of practice. The role oversees work assignments and provides contact reports or assists with fact-finding to inform recommendations about counseling or disciplinary actions. This is a full-time position with a varying shift. Situational (ad hoc) telework is authorized, but the position is not virtual or remote. Relocation and recruitment incentives and permanent change of station are not authorized. The physical demands include considerable standing, walking, bending, lifting, assisting with patient transfers and repositioning, and other patient-care activities. The role may involve exposure to infected patients and contaminated materials, use of protective clothing, and working with physically abusive patients.
