The Registered Nurse (RN) provides clinically competent, high-quality patient care using the nursing process of assessment, planning, intervention, implementation, and evaluation. The RN interacts effectively with patients, significant others, and other healthcare team members while maintaining professional nursing standards, and evaluates outcomes to determine the effectiveness of evidence-based nursing interventions. The role focuses on ensuring quality patient care and services through efficient use of resources. The RN practices within the scope and standards defined by the American Nurses Association and the Virginia Nurse Practice Act, making decisions and performing services in the patient's best interest while contributing positively to the patient experience and the healthcare team. The RN provides care to patients on an assigned shift. Inpatient staff work 12-hour shifts, though specialty units may differ according to unit or departmental needs. The RN completes assessments, develops and updates plans of care, provides and evaluates patient and family education, supports discharge planning, administers medications, documents care, promotes a safe environment and infection prevention, and participates in quality improvement. The RN also communicates unit needs and issues, prioritizes work, responds to emergencies, and may supervise LPNs and unlicensed assistive personnel when assigned. The RN serves as a professional role model, assesses team members' clinical competency, attends required orientations and training, and demonstrates flexibility in scheduling when needed to ensure patient care.
