About The Position
St. Mary’s Hospital in Kankakee, Illinois, is hiring a full-time Registered Nurse for its Behavioral Health department. The role is scheduled for day shifts from 7 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., with rotating weekends and holidays. A sign-on bonus of up to $10,000 is available to qualified candidates; eligibility and payout terms apply and are discussed during the interview process. Registered nurses provide care to patients with behavioral health needs. They treat and educate patients, offer advice and emotional support to patients and families, lead therapeutic groups, provide psychiatric crisis intervention, and perform seclusion and restraint when needed. They document medical histories and symptoms, assist with diagnostic testing and analysis, operate medical equipment, administer treatments and medications, and support follow-up and rehabilitation. Nurses also teach patients and families about managing illness or injury, diet and exercise programs, medication self-administration, and physical therapy. The role requires a current, valid state Registered Nurse license, a current BLS certificate upon hire and throughout employment, and working knowledge of mental health laws and practice standards, behavioral health treatment-team processes and programming, nursing functions in inpatient and outpatient behavioral health units, and the behavioral health continuum of care.
Requirements
- Current and valid state license as a Registered Nurse.
- Current BLS certificate upon hire and maintain current certification.
- Working knowledge of mental health laws and practice standards.
- Working knowledge of the interdisciplinary treatment-team process, behavioral health programming, and daily nursing functions for inpatient and outpatient behavioral health units.
- Working knowledge of the continuum of care for behavioral health care.
Responsibilities
- Treat patients and educate them about mental and medical conditions.

- Run therapeutic groups and provide psychiatric crisis intervention.
- Perform seclusion and restraint of patients.
- Record patients’ medical histories and symptoms.
- Help perform diagnostic tests and analyze results.
- Operate medical machinery and administer treatments and medications.
- Help with patient follow-up and rehabilitation.
- Teach patients and families how to manage illness or injury, diet and exercise programs, medication self-administration, and physical therapy.
- Perform other related duties.
