About The Position

The Nursing Officer of the Day (NOD) Registered Nurse delivers and coordinates safe, efficient, and effective patient care throughout the facility. The role provides care and directs others in promoting and maintaining health and preventing illness and injury, using the nursing process: systematic data gathering, assessment, nursing judgment, and evaluation of human responses to actual or potential health problems. The NOD demonstrates leadership and expertise in managing complex patient care and organizing care delivery to support continuity, peer accountability, access to care, and discharge planning. The nurse serves as a facility-wide nursing expert, supporting emergency medical response, identifying escalating medical crises and environmental factors, and allocating staffing resources to meet Veterans’ needs. The role uses advanced clinical knowledge and judgment to involve staff in planning, decision-making, and evaluating outcomes; evaluates practice and organizational processes; and guides and supports staff using professional standards and scientific evidence. During weekends, holidays, and after-hours tours when nursing management is absent, the NOD assumes authority and accountability for directing employees, staffing units, and allocating resources. The nurse rounds, consults with providers, collaborates with the Administrative Officer of the Day and interdisciplinary team on ongoing care and emergency or disaster response, and provides programmatic outcomes to nursing leadership to support improvements in organizational processes and patient care. The role may require coverage and travel to other clinics, including community-based outpatient clinics, to maintain uninterrupted patient care, and may require flexibility in schedule and assignments. The stated work schedule is 0730–2000. Telework is not available, and the position is not virtual. Relocation or recruitment incentives are not authorized.
