About The Position

4South is a 63-bed unit specializing in Oncology, Cellular Therapy, and Hospice care. We provide quality care to patients with diagnoses including pneumonia, rule out tuberculosis, sepsis, sickle cell anemia, cancer, and palliative care. Our approach is interdisciplinary, focusing on pain management, medications, self-care, nutrition, and education. We administer chemotherapy, monitor patients, provide pain management, metabolic support, and patient/caregiver education. We also care for patients undergoing chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation, as well as those with leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma undergoing stem cell/bone marrow transplantation (BMT). The unit also manages medical and telemetry patients and supports research protocols through medication administration. As a Registered Nurse on 4South, you will be responsible and accountable for applying the nursing process and delivering patient care for our specialized patient population. This includes providing and documenting direct and indirect patient care services to ensure patient safety, comfort, hygiene, and protection in a timely manner. You will educate patients on disease prevention and restorative measures, administer medications and therapeutic agents, perform skin tests, immunizations, phlebotomy, and initiate peripheral venous access. You will also observe and assess patients for signs and symptoms of illness, reactions to treatments, and general condition, initiating emergency procedures when necessary. Planning and implementing individualized patient care based on observations, and making appropriate reports and referrals are key. You will also identify patients' readiness for learning, assess safety concerns considering age and developmental factors, and demonstrate the ability to make necessary adjustments to meet the specific needs of diverse patient populations, including cultural, spiritual, age, psychosocial, communication, gender, sexual orientation, economic, education, family, and condition needs.

Requirements

  • Graduate of an accredited nursing program.
  • Current California State RN License required upon hire.
  • American Red Cross or American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support certification required upon hire.
  • Minimum 3 years recent acute RN experience in specialty.
  • Working knowledge of applicable Standards of Practice.
  • Demonstrates a dedication to customer service and an ability to meet the needs and expectations of patients and health care colleagues.
  • Meets clinical criteria and protocol for Clinical Nurse assigned level.

Nice To Haves

  • BSN or higher preferred.
  • ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy Immunotherapy certification preferred. Must obtain within 6 months of hire required.
  • For RN III: Specialty Certification (external applicants may obtain within one year of hire)
  • Experienced Oncology Nurses – BMTCN certification highly encouraged within one year of hire
  • No Oncology Experience– BMTCN certification highly encouraged within two years of hire.
  • Nurses are required to obtain 6 oncology related CEU’s each year – Exempt if BMTCN certified

Responsibilities

  • Provide and accurately document direct and indirect patient care services that ensures the safety, comfort, personal hygiene, and protection of patients in a timely manner
  • Provide patient education on disease prevention and restorative measures.
  • Provide administration of medications and therapeutic agents necessary to implement treatment, disease prevention, or rehabilitative plan of care.
  • Perform skin tests, immunizations, phlebotomy and the initiation of peripheral venous access.
  • Observe and assess signs and symptoms of illness, reactions to medications/treatments, general behavior, and/or general physical condition to determine normal versus abnormal characteristics and initiate emergency procedures when indicated.
  • Plan and implement individualized patient care based on observations. Implements appropriate reporting, referrals and care in accordance with standardized procedures while providing care to special patient populations and patients with diverse cultural backgrounds.
  • Identify patients' readiness for learning and their ability to follow directions/instructions and give consent while identifying and assessing patient safety concerns with respect to age and developmental considerations.
  • Demonstrate the knowledge and the ability to identify and make special adjustments as required to the specific populations' needs, including cultural, spiritual, age, psychosocial, communication, gender, sexual orientation, economic, education, family and condition needs.
