Registered Nurse - 4S Oncology - 12hr Days
About The Position
Cedars-Sinai is seeking a Registered Nurse for its 4South unit, a 63-bed facility specializing in Oncology, Cellular Therapy, and Hospice care. This unit provides quality care to patients with various medical diagnoses including pneumonia, tuberculosis, sepsis, sickle cell anemia, cancer, and palliative care needs. The nursing approach is multidisciplinary, focusing on pain management, medication administration, patient education, and self-care. The team also handles special procedures such as chemotherapy administration and monitoring, metabolic support, and palliative care. Additionally, the unit cares for patients undergoing chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation, as well as those with leukemia, lymphoma, and multiple myeloma undergoing stem cell/bone marrow transplantation (BMT). Medical and telemetry patients are also served, and nurses are trained for research protocols involving medication administration for studies. As a Registered Nurse on 4South, you will be responsible and accountable for applying the nursing process and delivering patient care within this specialty population. This includes providing and documenting direct and indirect patient care services to ensure patient safety, comfort, hygiene, and protection in a timely manner. You will also educate patients on disease prevention and restorative measures, administer medications and therapeutic agents, perform procedures like skin tests, immunizations, phlebotomy, and initiate peripheral venous access. A key part of the role involves observing and assessing patient conditions to identify normal versus abnormal characteristics, initiating emergency procedures when necessary, and planning and implementing individualized patient care. This includes appropriate reporting, referrals, and care in accordance with standardized procedures, while also being sensitive to diverse cultural backgrounds. You will assess patients' readiness for learning, their ability to follow instructions and give consent, and identify patient safety concerns considering age and developmental factors. Demonstrating knowledge and the ability to make necessary adjustments for specific populations' needs, including cultural, spiritual, age, psychosocial, communication, gender, sexual orientation, economic, educational, family, and condition-related factors, is essential.
Requirements
- Graduate of an accredited nursing program; BSN or higher preferred.
- Current California Registered Nurse (RN) license required upon hire
- Current American Red Cross or American Heart Association Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification required upon hire
- A minimum of one year of recent acute-care RN experience may be considered for Registered Nurse II positions
- Minimum of three years of recent acute-care RN experience in the applicable specialty for CNIII
- Demonstrated working knowledge of applicable standards of practice
- Demonstrated commitment to providing excellent customer service and the ability to meet the needs and expectations of patients, families, and healthcare colleague
- Meets the clinical criteria and established protocols for the assigned Clinical Nurse level
Nice To Haves
- ONS/ONCC Chemotherapy and Immunotherapy Certification preferred; required within six months of hire
- Registered Nurse III: Specialty certification required upon hire. External candidates may obtain certification within one year of hire
- Nurses without Oncology Experience: Specialty certification in their area of clinical experience is highly encouraged within one year of hire
- Experienced Oncology Nurses: OCN certification highly encouraged within one year of hire
- Experienced Transplant Nurses: Transplantation and Cellular Therapy Certified Nurse (TCTCN) certification highly encouraged within one year of hire
- Nurses are required to complete a minimum of six oncology-related continuing education units (CEUs) annually. This requirement is waived for nurses who maintain TCTCN or OCN certification
Responsibilities
- Provide and accurately document direct and indirect patient care services that ensures the safety, comfort, personal hygiene, and protection of patients in a timely manner
- Provide patient education on disease prevention and restorative measures.
- Provide administration of medications and therapeutic agents necessary to implement treatment, disease prevention, or rehabilitative plan of care.
- Perform skin tests, immunizations, phlebotomy and the initiation of peripheral venous access.
- Observe and assess signs and symptoms of illness, reactions to medications/treatments, general behavior, and/or general physical condition to determine normal versus abnormal characteristics and initiate emergency procedures when indicated.
- Plan and implement individualized patient care based on observations. Implements appropriate reporting, referrals and care in accordance with standardized procedures while providing care to special patient populations and patients with diverse cultural backgrounds.
- Identify patients' readiness for learning and their ability to follow directions/instructions and give consent while identifying and assessing patient safety concerns with respect to age and developmental considerations.
- Demonstrate the knowledge and the ability to identify and make special adjustments as required to the specific populations' needs, including cultural, spiritual, age, psychosocial, communication, gender, sexual orientation, economic, education, family and condition needs.
