The Registered Nurse floats primarily among GSH 1, River North and South, and float pool teams, providing care across diverse units and patient populations. Assignments may include MSICU, CVICU, PCU, CCU, Medical, Surgical, Inpatient Rehab, and the ER holding unit. The role requires flexibility and resourcefulness while managing patients with conditions such as respiratory failure, sepsis, GI bleeds, and postoperative complications, including complex needs in high-acuity settings. The nurse administers medications, manages advanced therapies, coordinates care with Hospitalists, Intensivists, and other interdisciplinary team members, and transports patients. The role may also assist in the ED holds area, especially during slower transport periods. Patient ratios vary by unit and acuity: ICU 1:2; PCU and CCU 1:4; Medical and Surgical 1:5; and Rehab 1:8 in a team model with RNs, LPNs, and Techs. Minimum experience varies by assignment: one year in ICU for ICU work; 1.5 years in PCU, or one year with strong references for ER holds; and one year in Medical or Surgical units. Certifications vary by role. Telemetry competency must be completed and passed before starting. Orientation includes two days of hospital orientation, one day on the assigned unit, and four hours of orientation to other units when floating.
