About The Position

Practices within the context of a client and family centred care model and in accordance with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) standards of practice for registered nurses and code of ethics, and the vision and values of the organization. This position provides baromedical nursing care within a compressed air environment to ambulatory clients of the Elective Program and possibly critically ill clients in the Emergency Program, both by working independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team. Performs clinical dives in a hyperbaric chamber as the diving nurse or functions as the backup nurse by providing assistance as required to the diving nurse. Enhances quality of life from the perspective of the client/family. Consults, confers, and collaborates with other health care givers. Demonstrates expertise and leadership in nursing practice. Maintains and advances clinical competence. Participates in client and family teaching programs; prepares and orientates clients to the chamber and hyperbaric oxygen treatment; participates on designated hospital committees/teams and approved research projects as assigned.

Requirements

  • Current practicing registration as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM).
  • Completion of a recognized critical care nursing program or two years' recent, related critical care experience.
  • Knowledge of Nursing theory and practice within a patient/family centred model of care.
  • Knowledge of the BCCNM standards for nursing practice.
  • Broad knowledge of nursing care issues commonly encountered in a critical care environment.
  • Knowledge of the indications, actions, reactions, routes, dosages, and side effects of drugs used in critical care environment.
  • Demonstrated ability in nursing practice to assess and manage critical and life-threatening situations.
  • Demonstrated ability to respond immediately and appropriately to sudden emergencies.
  • Demonstrated ability in the initiation and management of IV therapy.
  • Demonstrated skill in CPR techniques
  • Demonstrated ability to provide leadership and work direction.
  • Knowledge of other health care disciplines and their role in client care.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as a member of an interdisciplinary team.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with, and deal effectively with, clients and their families, co-workers, physicians, and other health care staff.
  • Demonstrated ability to teach clients and their families based on identified needs.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and prioritize workload.
  • Demonstrated ability to plan and implement plans of care.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate in writing accurately, concisely, and clearly.
  • Demonstrated computer skills including the ability to effectively use computerized client care information system.
  • Demonstrated physical ability to perform the duties of the position.
