About The Position

The Registered Nurse (RN) coordinates nursing care, including direct patient care, patient and family education, and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across settings and throughout the continuum of care to meet patient and family needs. Working within Mayo Clinic’s Nursing Professional Practice Model and the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, the RN plans, implements, evaluates, and communicates all phases of care for assigned patients. The RN provides leadership through precepting, formal and informal leadership, and quality-improvement activities; delegates care based on staff skill and experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and available resources; and may participate in committees or projects. The position is in an 18-bed, high-acuity intensive care unit serving adult critically ill neurologically impaired medical, surgical, and trauma patients. Care includes patients with head or spinal cord trauma, patients undergoing a variety of surgical procedures, and patients and families involved in organ donation. Unit-specific high-risk procedures include intracranial monitoring and unstable spinal cord stabilization. Prolonged EEG and state-of-the-art brachial plexus monitoring are among the unit’s patient-care technologies. The unit admits approximately 150 new patients per month and focuses on close monitoring of neurological status. The interdisciplinary team includes neurologists, neurosurgeons, critical care physicians, RNs, PCAs, health unit coordinators, respiratory therapists, social workers, chaplains, physical and occupational therapists, dietitians, clinical nurse specialists, and nursing education specialists. Mayo’s nursing care model is used. New graduate nurses are directed to apply through the Nurse Residency Program. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship; successful sponsorship requires state licensure and completion of VisaScreen or equivalent certification. A subset of employees may be required to drive a personal vehicle as part of the role.
