The Registered Nurse (RN) works in Mary Brigh 8DE, a highly specialized neuroscience intensive care unit caring for adult critically ill, neurologically impaired medical, surgical, and trauma patients. Care includes patients with head and spinal cord trauma, patients undergoing a wide variety of surgical procedures, and patients and families involved in the organ donation process. The 18-bed unit performs high-risk procedures such as intracranial monitoring and unstable spinal cord stabilization, and uses prolonged EEG and state-of-the-art brachial plexus monitoring. It admits approximately 150 new patients per month and focuses on close monitoring of patients’ neurological status. The RN coordinates nursing care, including direct patient care, patient and family education, and transitions of care. Working within Mayo Clinic’s Nursing Professional Practice Model and the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, the RN plans, implements, evaluates, and communicates all phases of care for assigned patients. The RN also provides leadership through precepting, formal or informal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts; delegates care based on staff skill and experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and available resources; and may contribute to committees or projects. The interdisciplinary team includes physicians, nurses, patient care assistants, health unit coordinators, respiratory therapists, social workers, chaplains, therapists, dietitians, and nursing specialists. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship. Successful sponsorship requires state licensure and completion of VisaScreen or equivalent certification. New graduate nurses should apply through Mayo Clinic’s Nurse Residency Program rather than this posting.
