The Registered Nurse provides routine and complex nursing care in an emergency care setting, practicing independently while maintaining awareness of relevant aspects of each clinical situation. The role requires the ability to work toward long-range goals and plans, manage clinical contingencies, and make appropriate assignments and delegations to other care providers. Consistent with the ANA Scope and Standards of Practice, the nurse uses the nursing process to assess, diagnose, plan, intervene, and evaluate care for assigned patients. The nurse addresses increasingly complex psychological, emotional, cultural, and social needs of patients and families; administers medications and treatments according to protocol; monitors treatment effectiveness and side effects; documents patient histories, symptoms, medications, and care; and assesses learning needs to provide education and identify relevant issues and resources. Newly hired experienced RNs must attend New Nurses Orientation within their first 30 days. New hires receive precepted onboarding, including organizational entry competency validation and emergency department-specific competency validation. Newly licensed RNs may participate in a residency program or other specific orientation. Skills and competencies are completed with a preceptor at the bedside and documented through the program’s tracking software. Annual competency verification requirements must also be completed.
