About The Position

The Clinical Nurse role integrates technical skills and theoretical knowledge to meet the needs of patients and families. Nurses assist the health care team with preventing illness and injury, maintaining wellness, and providing comfort. They deliver and accurately document direct, age-specific care based on medical orders and an integrated, multidisciplinary plan of care, and safely administer prescribed medications while identifying incompatibilities or interactions. Clinical Nurse I provides direction and education and begins acquiring unit-level leadership skills. Clinical Nurse II demonstrates mastery of clinical skills, begins applying this knowledge to a specific patient population, recognizes changes in patient situations, intervenes appropriately, mobilizes resources to meet individualized patient and family needs, and assumes unit-level leadership responsibilities. Clinical Nurse III demonstrates unit-level clinical knowledge, anticipates changes in patient situations and intervenes appropriately, and serves as a clinical role model. Nurses follow physician or licensed independent provider orders, nursing practice regulations in the Commonwealth of Virginia, the ANA Code of Ethics, national nursing practice standards, and VCUHS policies and procedures. They organize work and may delegate and supervise the work of RNs, LPNs, Care Partners, Unit Secretaries, and others. Clinicians work all three shifts, weekends, and holidays; individual rotations and schedules are established with the Nurse Manager or Practice Manager and may be adjusted to meet unit needs. The role serves age-specific groups as appropriate to the unit assignment. Physical requirements include lifting 20–50 pounds; prolonged standing and sitting; frequent bending; walking; climbing; and reaching. The work involves potential exposure to hazardous and infectious substances, a fast- and steady-paced and noisy environment, multiple priorities, and frequent and intense customer interactions. It also requires recall, reasoning, problem solving, hearing, clear speech, legible writing, reading, and logical thinking.
