The registered nurse (RN) coordinates nursing care, including direct patient care, patient and family education, and transitions of care. The RN supports professional nursing practice across settings and throughout the continuum of care to meet patient and family needs. Working within the Mayo Clinic Nursing Professional Practice Model and the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, the RN plans, implements, evaluates, and communicates all phases of care for assigned patients. The RN provides leadership through precepting, formal and informal leadership roles, and quality improvement efforts. The RN delegates care according to staff skill and experience, patient acuity, fiscal accountability, and available resources. Excellent communication, mentoring, and teaching skills are expected; the RN may also participate in committees or projects. Some employees may be required to use a personal vehicle as part of their role. The Family Medicine unit cares for medical patients with varied acute or chronic health problems, often involving multiple comorbidities, and includes an area for pediatric overflow. Care emphasizes discharge planning and daily multidisciplinary patient care rounds; complex planning may be needed to support patients returning to the community. The unit has 16 beds and care is provided by dedicated staff. This role is eligible for TN sponsorship. Successful sponsorship requires state licensure and completion of VisaScreen or equivalent certification. New graduate nurses are directed to apply through the Nurse Residency Program.
