The Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for using the nursing process—including assessment, diagnosis, outcomes and planning, implementation, and evaluation—to provide individualized nursing care to patients in the Emergency Department. The RN collaborates with interprofessional colleagues, including physicians, to plan, implement, and evaluate care; practices within the full scope of nursing expertise; and applies age- and population-specific standards for the assigned clinical setting. The role supports patients through preventative care, health maintenance, diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up across the continuum of care. The RN plans and coordinates care and performs patient assessment, education, triage, and other nursing interventions. Practice follows the Nurse Practice Act and administrative rules applicable to the state of practice and licensure, as well as Sanford Professional Nursing Practice standards and the American Nurses Association’s Scope and Standards of Practice and Code of Ethics.
