The Registered Nurse provides nursing care in adult correctional institutions using the nursing process of assessment, planning, implementation, and evaluation, in accordance with professional standards of practice. Services include 24-hour nursing care, telemedicine, chronic care clinics, sick-call screening and triage, medication administration, patient education, and basic life-support and emergency care. The nurse documents pertinent information in health records while maintaining confidentiality and coordinating with other departments as needed. Nurses may delegate tasks and workloads, work assigned hours, days, and locations, and provide coverage to meet institutional needs. The role also involves delivering evidence-based care and maintaining competence through education and certification focused on correctional nursing. Assignments to other duties or locations may be made to meet the Department’s clinical and administrative needs. This is a wage position limited to 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period from May 1 through April 30, and to an average of no more than 29 hours per week over that period. The wage employment period resets on May 1. The position offers no state benefits. A temporary enhanced hourly rate is currently approved due to critical staffing needs at designated facilities and remains in effect only while those shortages continue.
