Temporary- Registered Nurse
About The Position
The Registered Nurse provides nursing care at the McLean County Detention Facility in Bloomington, Illinois. The role involves assessing, planning, and delivering patient care; administering ordered medications and treatments; responding to emergencies; documenting care; and coordinating with practitioners and other medical services. The nurse also supports patient education, infection control, quality-improvement reporting, and the clinical needs of a correctional setting. Duties may include covering shifts at multiple correctional facilities, serving as a backup to the H.S.A./Site Manager, training coworkers, and performing other assigned duties.
Requirements
- Active nursing license in good standing in the state where services are provided.
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification with hands-on training.
- Excellent documentation skills.
Responsibilities
- Timely and accurately assess, plan, and deliver nursing care to patients.
- Contact practitioners to obtain orders.
- Administer prescribed medications, treatments, and other tasks as ordered by the practitioner.
- Provide emergency first aid care when appropriate.
- Check and record vital signs, peak flows, blood glucose checks, weight, and other on-site diagnostic tests when appropriate.
- Triage officer intake screenings for necessity and priority at sick call.
- Collect and record data for statistical reporting on the CQI.
- Record information in chronic clinic and outcome study documents as indicated.
- Report reactions to treatments and medications, and changes in patients’ emotional or physical condition.
- Educate patients on topics such as correctional facility policies and discharge planning.
- Record care information concisely, accurately, completely, and promptly in the appropriate format and forms.
- Collaborate and coordinate multiple medical services for diagnosis and treatment, as directed by the practitioner.
- Maintain aseptic techniques and infection-control precautions as required.
- Maintain and demonstrate working knowledge of pharmacology, including drug reactions and overdose.
- Maintain and demonstrate working knowledge of therapeutic diets and nutrition.
- Maintain and demonstrate working knowledge of social and behavioral sciences, particularly as applied to the correctional institutional setting.
- Recommend improved procedures, equipment, and supplies to the supervisor.
- Notify the supervisor of medical or security incidents.
- Present or participate in in-service education sessions.
- Perform duties within the scope of practice mandated by state and local standards.
- Maintain patient confidentiality and HIPAA practices as required by government agencies.
- Oversee and delegate duties as expected and allowed under the RN scope of practice.
- Cover shifts at multiple correctional facilities when directed.
- Act as a backup to the H.S.A./Site Manager when asked.
- Train new hires and coworkers when asked.
- Perform any other duties as assigned.
